MyBizColorado wins prestigious NASCIO 2020 State IT Recognition Award

DENVER – Today, the National Association of Chief Information Officers (NASCIO) announced the winners for their coveted 2020 State IT Recognition Awards, which included MyBizColorado ( in the Digital Government: Government to Business category. The annual NASCIO awards recognize the top 10 projects or initiatives across the country that demonstrate the innovative use of information technology in state government to solve business problems and create opportunities to more easily connect citizens to government services. This year, 90 nominations were submitted by states and territories and reviewed by more than 60 voluntary NASCIO member judges. 


“Since its inception, MyBizColorado has made it easier for Coloradans to realize their dreams of owning a business,” said Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold. “Congratulations to our IT department and all of our partners on the MyBizColorado team for this well-earned and prestigious honor.”

“Small businesses are vital to Colorado’s economy and the Colorado Office of International Development and International Trade is committed to helping them thrive,” said Betsy Markey, Executive Director of OEDIT. “Now, more than ever, it’s essential that we make forming businesses easy for Colorado entrepreneurs and with MyBizColorado, it’s never been easier.”


MyBizColorado is the State of Colorado’s small business online filing tool, which was created to help new businesses get up and running efficiently to become part of the Colorado economy. This user-friendly and intuitive website provides a single path for registering new businesses with the State of Colorado, and obtaining necessary licenses from multiple state agencies. MyBizColorado pulls in business owners’ information from the Secretary of State’s application and allows them to register for:

  • a sales tax license with the Department of Revenue,

  • a wage withholding account with the Department of Revenue, and

  • an unemployment insurance account with the Department of Labor and Employment.


“The great success of the MyBizColorado project was largely due to the collaborative team all marching toward a single goal: to help small business professionals more easily interact with state government,” said Anthony Neal-Graves, the Governor’s Office of Information Technology Interim Chief Information Officer & Executive Director.


Spearheaded by the Governor’s Office and the Secretary of State, this project was implemented in partnership with the Governor’s Office of Information Technology (OIT), the Statewide Internet Portal Authority (Colorado SIPA), the Lieutenant Governor’s Office, Colorado Department of Labor and Employment, Colorado Department of Revenue, Department of Regulatory Agencies, Office of Economic Development and International Trade and Colorado Interactive.


"SIPA's mission is to connect the public to government services using innovative technology solutions,” says Catherine Kunst, SIPA’s Acting Executive Director. "MyBizColorado was built entirely without funding from the state’s General Fund, saving Coloradans tax dollars while providing them with a secure way to start a business in Colorado."


The State of Colorado won two of the 10 NASCIO State IT Recognition Awards this year. The myColorado™ mobile app also came away a winner in the Digital Government: Government to Citizen category. To ensure states have access to the innovations and leading practices of their peers, all award submissions have been added to NASCIO’s Awards Library.
